Talking backstage during Paris Fashion Week about the pending nail trends, Marian Newman is adamant that although she has been doing nail art throughout her 25 year career, there is a far more sophisticated look coming to the fore. As the go-to nail artist, with a library of editorials, covers, and runway shows in her beauty library and having tended to the fingertips of countless A-listers (Kate Moss, the Beckhams, Gisele Bündchen, to name a few), Newman is the gold standard when it comes to talons.
This season, she quips backstage at Maiyet’s show in Paris, “The nails are becoming shorter. We have seen all the madness: the stiletto nail and alike. The look is now less try-hard.” Beautiful glossy shades are now de rigeur, while matching pinkies and toes are no longer a no-no. Nail art has taken a different turn. “It’s now more about embellished nails using metallic cutouts and shapes to accessorize the nails, just to catch the light, rather than hand-painted designs.”
Marian Newman’s Do’s and Don’ts:
“I don’t believe in nails needing to breathe; as long as they are properly cared for you can wear as much nail varnish as you wish.”
“Do remember to hydrate your nails. Water, funnily, is the worst culprit for stripping nails of their hydration. “
“Don’t over-buff your nails. Just like coloring your hair, if you do it too often it can have a damaging effect.”
“Do massage your cuticles and nails with a nourishing oil; once a day is the minimum.”
“I don’t believe that any particular superfood or supplement will drastically change your nails, but I do believe in a balanced diet.”
